Nothing Without Each other.
As i was watching the Princes Trust Fashion Rocks show on TV the other night, i constantly heard a bombardment of cliches from old people with shiny hair (i think you call them designers?).One thing did stick out though, Beth Ditto said: "Fashion is key, music wouldn't be the same without it". I guess its true these days with enough music channels to shake a stick at, it's not surprising really. Just think for yourself.Think of a band... you picture the video. What are they wearing? you could probably tell me right? so has fashion become more important than the music. I'll be honest i would rather look at a picture of Girls aloud to see what they're wearing rather than listen to their music so i guess I'm partly to blame.
With every type of music there seems to be a dress code. Emo's,Goths,Scene kids, Nu-Ravers, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Pop. What we wear tells people what clique we're in. i go against that a little though... i dress like a tramp and listen to Frank Sinatra. Although it's pretty obvious i like rock and indie music by my fashion sense i hardly say "i love Sclub7!".

So what comes first? The Chicken or the Egg? I mean does Music come as a result of the Fashion. Or is Fashion Interpreted from the music?
To me it would make sense that the music came first then bought a style along with it. Sweaty rock musicians make for sweaty rock fans. I guess there is a practical sense to it. You wear your bands t shirt... highlighting that you're a fan.Dark colours are a must. Rock is about moshing. White wouldn't wash up well after beer has been spilt all over you while crowd surfing.

The Punk movement was a different kettle of fish. It seemed the fashion came before the music. People dressed differently as a means to rebel. To not conform to society and partly due to employment difficulties in London at the time people wore used old clothes because thats all they could afford. Tearing them and using safety pins, the bondage style trousers, the doc martens. This was about the sense of anarchy. Punks wanted people to feel intimidated. Their clothes said something about their political views. Then came the music.. The sex pistols. They gave punk a sound and with that a movement. Vivienne Westwood opened the infamous clothes shop 'Sex' and the sex pistols wore her clothes. The rest, as they say, is history.
The ironic part to it is that the Sex Pistols and punks in general were anti- fashion.
Fashion or Freak?

So every Friday i get on the self conscious train and head for a breakdown as i can never decide what to wear. I want to look like i haven't bothered but at the same time look amazing. I want to look different but can only afford clothes from the same cheap places everyone else goes to so i often have to make a H&M top look completely different. Have the same problem?

OK so here's the plan email me your photo to katie.thurlow@hotmail.co.uk and i can put your photo on here for other people to rate you and comment your pic. Lets face it everyone secretly loves to be judged! People are going to be honest on here! i certainly will be. Hopefully it will give people a chance to let you know how you can customise your clothes or add accessories to give you a different look. Hopefully people might give you inspiration to try something new! i will be updating these picture weekly. Don't forget to rate people and comment on their outfits. oh and be nice girls and boys slanging matches and rude insults are for nasty people like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan!

Fashion icon Vs Fashion Idiot

Over the years it’s easy to point out people who have been fashion icons, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, Debbie Harry. These women have helped shape the fashion Industry bringing fashion to the forefront. Today it seems the people with iconic status are the people who re doing things in their own way. I suppose its still the good, the bad and the ugly syndrome. More like the naturals, the try-hards and the down right desperate (Victoria Beckham anyone?).

There are some people that ooze individuality from every pore in the body. Now if anyone was as lucky as me to have seen Beth Ditto from The gossip perform at Reading festival this year, then you probably walked way with an amazing sense of … well jealousy. She is possibly the coolest person on the planet and what makes her so cool? The fact she doesn’t give a fuck. Her dress was too small so she took it off! In fact you may be thinking why is this woman a style icon? She spends most of the time on stage not wearing clothes… because when she does… its experimental and non-conformist. It’s shocking and she’s not afraid of that. Beth even enjoys putting big names in the fashion industry in their place:

I love the idea of questioning people who are never questioned. This idea that Coco Chanel was a fucking goddess. I mean, she had a time and a place and it’s important to embrace history, but when people hold on to stuff, nothing new can happen, you know? I always get really sad about that.’

Beth even slated Kate Moss: ‘She looks boring as hell’, although I think this was before they became friends!

Victoria Beckham would probably do better if she had an attitude like Beth. She seems so desperate to be recognised as a player in the fashion industry. I don’t blame her though apart from David Beckham she doesn’t seem to have any talent anywhere else! She doesn’t create trends she follows them and makes a tit of herself in the process. Seriously Victoria it as a sad and desperate woman who tries to upstage a beloved dead princess while dressed as big bird from Sesame Street.
Today’s Style icons are the people who take the risks and don’t conform. They’re also the people that don’t idly sit with their mouths shut they have something to say. That’s not to say we’re going to like it. The fundamental differences between Beth Ditto and Victoria Beckham is that Beth says something by what she’s wearing, a statement. Victoria lets her clothes wear her.

The Crusade
So here it is. With your help i want to stick my middle finger up to a million fashion magazines that constantly puke their over priced fashion bile into our mouths and expect us to eat it up like good little girls and boys. I bought Vogue the other day... and apart from Sophie Dahl looking amazing dressed like Deborah Harry there wasn't a lot in there to be inspired by. I'm pretty sure in Debbie Harry's early days she wasn't styled by some pretentious plonker.

If you're anything like me you may not want to become a label sheep and look like every other person out there... OK I'm not saying that i haven't been out and seen another girl wearing the same Topshop top as me, what i am saying is wear things in you're own way. Bring your own quirkiness and style to outfits...Dare to be different. Fashion should be fun. Fashion should be a way of expressing individuality. Fashion should make old people stare.

Fashion shouldn't define who we are it should define what we want to say about ourselves.

Now raise your middle finger and enjoy!
