Nothing Without Each other.
As i was watching the Princes Trust Fashion Rocks show on TV the other night, i constantly heard a bombardment of cliches from old people with shiny hair (i think you call them designers?).One thing did stick out though, Beth Ditto said: "Fashion is key, music wouldn't be the same without it". I guess its true these days with enough music channels to shake a stick at, it's not surprising really. Just think for yourself.Think of a band... you picture the video. What are they wearing? you could probably tell me right? so has fashion become more important than the music. I'll be honest i would rather look at a picture of Girls aloud to see what they're wearing rather than listen to their music so i guess I'm partly to blame.
With every type of music there seems to be a dress code. Emo's,Goths,Scene kids, Nu-Ravers, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Pop. What we wear tells people what clique we're in. i go against that a little though... i dress like a tramp and listen to Frank Sinatra. Although it's pretty obvious i like rock and indie music by my fashion sense i hardly say "i love Sclub7!".
So what comes first? The Chicken or the Egg? I mean does Music come as a result of the Fashion. Or is Fashion Interpreted from the music?
To me it would make sense that the music came first then bought a style along with it. Sweaty rock musicians make for sweaty rock fans. I guess there is a practical sense to it. You wear your bands t shirt... highlighting that you're a fan.Dark colours are a must. Rock is about moshing. White wouldn't wash up well after beer has been spilt all over you while crowd surfing.
The Punk movement was a different kettle of fish. It seemed the fashion came before the music. People dressed differently as a means to rebel. To not conform to society and partly due to employment difficulties in London at the time people wore used old clothes because thats all they could afford. Tearing them and using safety pins, the bondage style trousers, the doc martens. This was about the sense of anarchy. Punks wanted people to feel intimidated. Their clothes said something about their political views. Then came the music.. The sex pistols. They gave punk a sound and with that a movement. Vivienne Westwood opened the infamous clothes shop 'Sex' and the sex pistols wore her clothes. The rest, as they say, is history.
The ironic part to it is that the Sex Pistols and punks in general were anti- fashion.
